FAQ

Q: How did Offgrid Water start?
A: Damian, (me, the founder) set it up in 2023 after having used units on his canal boat in London since 2021 as I was fed up with spending 2-4 hours every week filling my tank and worrying about water.
Q: Where are you based and where do you cover?
A: We’re in London at the moment but can ship wherever. No challenge is too much for us!
Q: What types of water filtration systems does Offgrid Water offer?
A: We offer a range of water filtration systems designed for various off-grid needs, including the StageOne system for initial filtration from sources like canals, rivers, lakes, or rainwater; the StageTwo system for further purification; and the FinalStage Reverse Osmosis (RO) unit for remineralized drinking water quality. These systems can be used individually or combined for comprehensive water purification solutions, ideal for houseboats, barges, and narrowboats, as well as other off-grid applications.
Q: Which system should I choose?
This is best explained with a table:
Water type Use Product to buy
Dirty Canal water Washing and drinking StageOne + StageTwo + RO
Medium Canal Water Washing StageOne (we recommend StageTwo too)
Rainwater harvesting Washing and drinking Explorer / Rain and/or RO system
Upper course Alpine springs Drinking Explorer or Rain
Untrustworthy tank water Drinking StageTwo and/or RO
Q: Do you drink your own filtered canal water?
A: Absolutely - I’ve been doing it for 3 years now!
Q: Do your units have a pump? How do they suck water out?
A: Every unit has an onboard pump which sucks water from a tank or out of a river or canal except the StageTwo which is meant to fit after a rainwater tank filled by a StageOne or a Rain or Explorer unit. If you’re filling your water up by other means or have access to mains water, the StageTwo could be ideal as an addon.
Q: How much does it cost per year to run?
That depends on the unit and how much you use it as well as the quality of water you are filtering. Here's a rough guide:
Water type Example Approximate cost per year (Low to high)
Dirty urban canal water Frequent use on liveaboard houseboat with RO unit £150-170
Rural canal water Frequent use on a liveaboard with StageOne and StageTwo only £60-80
Rainwater harvesting Rural property with intense usage with Explorer, Rain or StageOne £40-80
Upper course stream Campervan with Explorer or Rain unit three weeks per year £15-30
Q: How can I ensure the water from my system is safe to drink?
A: While our StageTwo and FinalStage RO systems are designed to produce drinkable water, we recommend conducting your own water quality tests, especially if using water from highly variable sources. This ensures safety and compliance with your specific health standards. The FinalStage RO system is the best solution if you’re worried about drinking water - it'll reduce river water down to 20 TDS without any pre-filtering (but may damage the filters so we recommend you pre-filter anything going to the RO system).
Q: Do you do borehole pumps?
A: Not at the moment but if you fill a header tank from a borehole, we’ll be able to filter it from there. You should test the water first to find out what impurities there are so we can provide you with the right setup.
Q: Do you do seawater or brackish water?
A: No, we don’t currently - Seawater and desalination are quite complex and require much more heavy-duty equipment. We’re working on it though!
Q: How does the reverse osmosis (RO) system work, and what are its specifications?
A: The FinalStage RO unit is designed to remove a wide range of contaminants, including chlorine, fluoride, nitrates, hard metals, viruses, cysts, and bacteria, then remineralizes the water to ensure it's healthy and great to drink. It operates on a 230V 3-pin plug or a 12V option with a buck converter, consuming 75W when in use and 1.4W on standby. The unit filters down to 0.0001UF, providing a flow rate of 1.6 liters per minute. Remember to run the unit for 10 minutes initially to flush it out.
Q: How should I install and maintain my water filtration system?
A: Our systems are designed to be plug-and-play, requiring minimal installation effort. For the StageOne system, ensure you flush the system for two minutes before use and chlorinate your water as instructed. For maintenance, monitor your filters and UV lights for signs of wear and replace them as necessary to maintain optimal performance. Replacement frequency may vary based on water source quality and usage.
Q: What is the warranty on Offgrid Water products?
A: Our products come with a two-year warranty covering mechanical and electrical issues, excluding damage from fair wear and tear or maintenance tasks like tightening filters or clamps. Pumps have a separate one-year warranty. Note that using third-party repair services without our approval may void the warranty. Consumables like UV lights and cartridges are not covered under warranty but we can help with that - they’re not expensive.
Q: What are the return and cancellation policies for Offgrid Water products?
A: Due to the bespoke nature of our customized systems, the standard 14-day cancellation right does not apply once production has begun. For non-customized products, you may cancel within 14 days of receiving the goods. If you receive damaged or defective goods, contact us immediately for a resolution. Customers are responsible for the direct cost of returning non-customized goods.
Q: What should I do if my pump stops working or something goes wrong?
A: Pumps stopping probably means that a filter needs to be changed. Please check the customer information section or contact us 09:00-18:00 Monday to Friday via Whatsapp or Email.
